Court reconvenes for day 2 of Swift murder trial

FURTHER COVERAGE:

DRESDEN, Tenn. — The second day of trial resumed Wednesday in Weakley County in the case of the State of Tennessee versus David Swift.

David Swift was indicted on premeditated 1st degree murder charges in 2022, more than a decade after his wife, Karen Swift’s body was found by hunters near a Dyersburg Cemetery.

This was just weeks after she had filed for divorce.

Wednesday the lead investigator on the case spoke on the stand about two interviews with Swift.

Swift voluntarily gave one interview that was conducted on October 30th, 2011.

Another interview was conducted the following day at the request of investigators.

Swift, who appeared to be crutches in the interview, spoke about a rocky marriage between the two individuals.

Swift said Karen was known to “sneak out” or leave the house late at night, go to friends and partake in “risky” partying behavior including excessive drinking.

Testimony Wednesday also focused on Karen’s SUV, and when discovered had a flat tire and some of her belongings in it.

Prosecutor Danny Goodman conceded the jury would not hear any testimony about forensic evidence but argued that Swifts actions and controlling behavior leading up to the day Karen went missing are what links him to the murder.

Swift’s defense attorney says he couldn’t have murdered Karen due to a knee injury and also points out the lack of forensic evidence in the case.

Court will resume Thursday morning at the Weakley County Courthouse.
