Summer ‘brain drain’: Tips to avoid learning loss for students
JACKSON, Tenn. — School is out and students are ready to enjoy their summer. However, what are some ways we can ensure students retain all of the information that they learned?
It is referred to as a “brain drain” or the “summer slide.”
It can affect students of all grades around the United States.
Research shows that elementary students lose, on average, 20% of their gains throughout summer when it comes to literacy.
“And that effect, it snowballs, it’s compounding,” said Brandon Cardet-Hernandez, former teacher and principal. “Over time, more and more loss. It impacts motivation, and of course it just impacts their ability to stay on track and become proficient in the skills that they’re learning.”
So how can we help reduce this “brain drain?”
Cardet-Hernandez says it is important to find time to read to and with our students.
He also says there are educational video games that can help kids very well. Click here for more information.
