Miss Juneteenth Scholarship Pageant returns to Jackson

JACKSON, Tenn.—Juneteenth festivities are underway here in the Hub city as we enter the month of June.

With Juneteenth just around the corner, there’s no better way to kick it off than with the Miss Juneteenth Scholarship Pageant. It supports the fundamental values for furthering education.

“The pageant is actually a fundraiser. A scholarship pageant for young ladies entering college. It’s sponsored by the Society for African American Cultural Awareness, better known as (SAACA). And we have a special Juneteenth coalition that just handles the pageant,” said Wendy Martin, president of SAACA.

They like to call this a cultural experience to uplift the community in several ways that advance the knowledge African American history. The contestants in this competition are judged by their essays, evening gown, talent, interviews with judges, and on stage questions.

“We’re just proud to be able to present our fourth annual pageant and not only do we compete here, but we compete on a national scale as well,” Martin said.

This is the fourth year for the Miss Juneteenth Jackson Scholarship Pageant and it’s growing every year. One director says there’s unity in community and she tells us why.

“Just bringing them together not only to learn about history, their ancestors but about friendship and sisterhood,” said Tisa Day, director of Miss Juneteenth Scholarship Pageant.

It’s more than a beauty pageant. It’s about who they are and discovering and learning more about themselves.
