Our Jackson Home to install new crosswalk art in downtown Jackson
PRESS RELEASE FROM OUR JACKSON HOME:
OUR JACKSON HOME TO INSTALL NEW CROSSWALK ART IN DOWNTOWN JACKSON
Jackson, Tenn. June 4, 2024 – Our Jackson Home, in partnership with the City of Jackson, theCO, and Jackson Downtown Development Corporation, will install new crosswalk art at the intersection of Main St. and Church St. in Downtown, Jackson, designed and led by local artist Callie Wright.
The installation will take place on June 7 from 8am – 5pm, and June 8 from 8am – 6pm. All volunteers over the age of 13 are welcome to attend and paint the road any time during the installation; no painting experience is necessary. The intersection of Main and Church will close at 8am on June 7 and reopen at 6pm on June 11.
“We’re excited to complete all four crosswalk art installations at the Main St. and Church St. intersection, designed and led by local artist, Callie Wright,” Lizzie Emmons, Programer Director of Our Jackson Home, said. “Callie has done an excellent job with her ‘Rockabilly Walk’ temporary art installation, and we’re grateful to have the opportunity to work with the City of Jackson and many community volunteers to complete the project.”
The new artwork titled “Rockabilly Walk” is an extension of the original crosswalk art project on Church St. that was completed in 2023. The first installation included a guitar neck on one side, and a piano keyboard on the other. During the new installation, a fresh coat of paint will be added to the existing crosswalk art on Church St.
“When I first proposed the crosswalk design, my goal was to add a sense of playfulness, musicality, and interactivity to everyone’s walk – and it’s been fantastic to see it bring so much joy so far! I’m looking forward to finishing the intersection as both a musical and visual art landmark celebrating Jackson,” Wright said.
The new installation to be installed on the Main St. sides of the same intersection will include four bars of sheet music from the song “Jackson”, performed and made famous by Johnny Cash. The sheet music in the new installation will correspond with the lyrics, “Yeah, we’re goin’ to Jackson. Ain’t ever coming back.”
