$31 million in projects: McKellar-Sipes Airport to undergo several changes
JACKSON, Tenn. — A local airport is undergoing quite a few changes, and possibly more to come in the future.
The Jackson-Madison County Airport Authority held their board meeting Monday evening.
There are about $31 million dollars worth of projects currently underway at the airport.
That includes a $24 million dollar runway project, work on the control tower, building an access road and parking lot plus more.
Also on the agenda tonight, officials are considering the possibility of adding a hotel on the airport campus as it continues to grow.
As for infrastructure changes, they are planning a new terminal that they hope to get funded in the next 5 years, and a new hangar area.
Executive Director for the Jackson-Madison County Airport Authority, Steve Smith, shares their ultimate goal behind the current and future changes.
“McKellar-Sipes Regional Airport has always been a regional airport but now we’re expanding to be a true regional airport. We have letters of support from 21 different entities, counties, businesses all across West Tennessee. So, McKellar-Sipes is going to actually become a regional hub for airport and air travel,” said Smith.
The board is also in discussion on an airport name change.
They want a name that personifies the regional connection their looking for and ties in to West Tennessee.
