2024 HURRICANE SEASON FORECAST:

NOAA’s outlook for the 2024 Atlantic hurricane season, which spans from June 1 to November 30, predicts an 85% chance of an above-normal season, a 10% chance of a near-normal season and a 5% chance of a below-normal season.

NOAA is forecasting a range of 17 to 25 total named storms (winds of 39 mph or higher). Of those, 8 to 13 are forecast to become hurricanes (winds of 74 mph or higher), including 4 to 7 major hurricanes (category 3, 4 or 5; with winds of 111 mph or higher). Forecasters have a 70% confidence in these ranges.

The upcoming Atlantic hurricane season is expected to have above-normal activity due to a confluence of factors, including near-record warm ocean temperatures in the Atlantic Ocean, development of La Nina conditions in the Pacific, reduced Atlantic trade winds and less wind shear, all of which tend to favor tropical storm formation.

TONIGHT:

A weak cold front is passing early tonight and that will usher in some dry and mild air from the north. The winds will be light out of the north and the skies will be clear. That will allow temperatures to drop down to the mid to upper 50s overnight. Rain is NOT in the forecast.

TUESDAY:

Rain showers will stay away for out Tuesday but a few clouds may be lingering but not many. A light breeze out of the north though will keep temperatures below normal with highs reaching the upper 70s to near 80° in the afternoon. Tuesday night lows will be very pleasant and fall down to the mid 50s overnight due to the dry air mass sticking around the Mid South.

WEDNESDAY:

High pressure will continue to control our weather for the middle of the week. That means mostly sunny skies and another rain free day. The winds are expected to be light and come out of the northeast. Highs on Wednesday will reach the low 80s and Wednesday night lows will drop down to around 60°.

THURSDAY:

The great weather is likely to continue on Thursday. Thursday highs will be a little warmer and reach the mid to upper 80s as the winds will change to the east during the day and maybe to the southeast by late in the day on Thursday allowing Thursday night lows to fall to the mid 60s. Rain again will stay away on Thursday.

FRIDAY:

The humidity and temperature will begin to climb across West Tennessee as we get closer to the weekend. Highs on Friday will make it up to the low 90s and it will feel in the mid 90s in the afternoon. The winds are forecast to vary in direction at times as an area of high pressure will move around us. Sunny skies are expected again and no rain is expected. Friday night lows will only drop to around 70° to kick off the weekend.

FATHER’S DAY WEEKEND:

The hottest weather of 2024 so far will be here this weekend. For the first time this season we are expecting highs to reach the mid 90s and the heat index (feels like) temperature will peak above 100° at times with Father’s Day being even hotter than Saturday. The winds will have an easterly component to them on Saturday before coming more out of the southeast on Sunday. Weekend morning lows will start out in the low to mid 70s. Rain may look to come back early next week but we are not expecting showers or storms at this time for the upcoming weekend.

FINAL THOUGHT:

After several rainy and stormy weeks in a row, the pattern change looks to have finally returned to West Tennessee. Dry weather is expected this week and could stick around into next week as well. Highs will stay cool to kick off the work week but each day during the week will be hotter than the previous day and that will continue into the weekend as well. This weekend will be the hottest weather of the year so far so make some outdoor plans for this Father’s Day Weekend.
