Attorney confirms Gibson County sheriff faces 18 felony charges

GIBSON COUNTY, Tenn. — A local sheriff has been indicted on multiple felony charges.

Gibson County Sheriff Paul Thomas was booked into the Gibson County jail Tuesday around 10:43 a.m. and records available online indicate he bonded out of custody within minutes.

According to booking information, Thomas’ bond was set at $25,000.

All of this comes after sources told WBBJ, Thomas could be indicted this week and be required to turn himself in.

We spoke with his attorney, William Massey, who confirmed Thomas is facing 18 felony charges, including official misconduct.

Between May and October of 2022 Thomas and Alliance Group allegedly profited from the labor of six inmates, and failed to properly guard all six inmates in order to prevent escape.

In 2022 the FBI investigated Sheriff Thomas, the Gibson County Correctional Complex, the Orchard House Transitional home, and Alliance Staffing of which Thomas is a partial owner.

In September of 2022 a search warrant was executed by FBI agents at Thomas’ home, as well as the three other locations mentioned.

Items that were confiscated were financial records and cell phones.

Thomas has a court date set for September 16.
