Beat the heat: Ways to stay safe as temperatures continue rising
JACKSON, Tenn. — With forecasts predicting temperatures in the 90’s this weekend, experts are urging others to prepare for the heat before it hits.
As temperatures increase in our area of the state, we have a few tips from experts to stay safe in the extreme heat.
AAA reminds us that with hotter weather comes an increased risk for children, pets and vehicles.
“Now is the time to act to make sure we are checking our vehicles before the heat hits, so we don’t have to worry about it when the heat does get here,” said Megan Cooper, public and government relations consultant at AAA.
It is recommended drivers check their battery, coolant, and tires, because extreme heat can pose risks to your vehicle that could cost you hundreds of dollars.
Remember to stay hydrated when working, exercising or outdoors.
“Drink water, not sugary drinks or alcohol. Drink water even if you’re not thirsty. Go ahead and be drinking water to keep your body hydrated. That’s going to help you stay cool,” said Ginger Rowsey, public information officer for Jackson-Madison County regional Health Department.
And never leave a child or pet alone in a vehicle. If you see this call 9-1-1.
“A lot of these incidents are accidents. It’s really easy to, in the hecticness of the summer if a child is sleeping and you’re taking in groceries or you’re running errands, it can be easy to sometimes forget them and so place those reminders in your vehicle,” said Cooper.
According to tn.gov, our state is one of 20 states that have laws against leaving a child or pet unattended in a vehicle.
