African American Heritage Festival underway in Humboldt
HUMBOLDT, Tenn.—Juneteenth celebrations are underway here in West Tennessee.
The annual African American Heritage Festival has returned to Humboldt for its eighth year.
Juneteenth celebrated on June nineteenth is the celebration of the emancipation of enslaved African Americans in the United States.
Many in the city came out to listen to music, enjoy food, and congregate with members of the Humboldt community.
“It feels great to be here knowing that Juneteenth marks the freedom of my ancestors. It’s the freedom for us to just kind of like live, continue to live, continue to dream it. It feels really good to be here,” said Katrina Smith, MC for African Amer. Heritage Festival.
The official day to observe Juneteenth is June 19.
