A local family honored with street renaming

JACKSON, Tenn.—One street in Jackson has a new name.

A ceremony took place this morning at 10 to rename a street in honor of a local family.

As of today, 611 Day Street in Jackson will now be known as Slack Street.

The dedication took place to honor the Slack family and most notably, the Slack brothers which includes, Jerome, Walter E. Sr., Herbert, Robert and Richard  Jr.

The Slack family originally migrated to Jackson from Mississippi over nine decades ago.

The family remains an integral part of building what is known as Jackson and Madison County today.

A ribbon cutting was held for the event and a new sign was also unveiled.

“Again, it’s a beautiful thing for all the family to come together, so today we’re gathered here at Mother Liberty for some light breakfast and socializing and from here we’re actually going to be moving down the street for the unveiling,” said Pierre Slack.

The event honors the family that not only worked to build the Jackson community but also contributed to the history of Tennessee.
