City schedules meeting to discuss budget, some councilmembers may not attend

JACKSON, Tenn. — A meeting has been scheduled for the Jackson City Council to discuss and potentially vote on the proposed budget. However, all nine City Councilmembers might not be in attendance.

The City of Jackson posted on their Facebook page to notify the public of the special-called City Council meeting. It will be held on Friday, July 12, at 9 a.m.

Unfortunately, not all City Councilmembers, including councilman J.P. Stovall, will be in Jackson at that time.

“So I will be in Indianapolis for our denomination, we call it a general assembly. It’s our international convention,” Stovall said. “I’m an ordained bishop in my denomination, so we’ll be there voting on church matters and things of that nature for the denomination that I’m a part of.”

Mayor Scott Conger sent out an email to each councilmember following their meeting Tuesday, July 2. He asked each member to reach out to him regarding any dates they would not be available from then until August 31.

Councilman Stovall responded to that email the same day, providing the dates he would be gone for the conference.

We sent an email to Mayor Conger Friday morning, regarding those who will not be at the next meeting. Mayor Conger replied saying that they will not be absent and that state law allows councilmembers to use Zoom to attend meetings virtually. He said they will use that option.

“He responded and said that you all would be able to attend the meeting and vote via Zoom. Will you be able to do that?” we asked Stovall.

“Well I will not be able to do that because of a time conflict,” Stovall said. “When the City Council meeting is going on, I will be in general council session meetings at the same time with other ordained bishops. So it will prevent me from being able to meet and vote via Zoom.”

Councilwoman Marda Wallace says she will also be out of town during the meeting and will be in Pacific time zone. So, she says she is not sure if she will be able to attend on Zoom.

We reached out to Mayor Conger again Friday morning to ask why July 12 was the best available day for the Council to meet. We are still waiting for his response.
