State Rep. candidates campaign at JEC meeting
JACKSON, Tenn. — With Election Day approaching, two candidates took the opportunity to campaign.
The Jackson Exchange Club hosted a special meeting at the Doubletree Hotel.
This meeting allowed the District 73 State Representative candidates, incumbent Chris Todd and former Madison County Mayor Jimmy Harris, to campaign to the club members as well as visitors.
Some visitors included former State Representative Jimmy Eldrige, County Commission members Gary Deaton and Mike Bryant, as well as Sheriff Julian Weiser and Commissioner Jeff Wall.
Harris spoke about how he was able to be part of establishing the first veterans service office to Jackson, and one of the issues that he said he and his opponent differ on special interests groups.
“My opponent, over the six years that he’s been in office, has collected somewhere in the neighborhood of $244,000 dollars from special interest groups and I just don’t feel comfortable doing that,” said Harris.
Harris took the time to talk also about small businesses and how important they are in the community.
“When the business thrives, the community thrives and that’s really important. Small businesses make up about 75 to 80 percent of the business world of this community so small business is kind of the backbone,” said Harris.
Todd stated that if he was re-elected, he wouldn’t do anything different.
“I’m continually in touch with the people of Madison County. I listen to their concerns, I listen to their issues and if there’s something on state level that I can do, I’m gonna be responsive to them,” said Todd.
Todd took the time to discuss tax breaks and also made a point to discuss the economy.
“We had a booming economy when President Trump was in office and we have to get him back in office and we will see an improvement in this country. Tennessee is tight. We balance our budget, we make sure that we are spending within our means and we give rebates. We give refunds to people,” said Todd.
The last day for early voting is July 27 and Election Day is on August 1.
