New teachers prepare for upcoming school year in Jackson
JACKSON, Tenn. — The school year is almost here and many teachers have already started preparing for this year. New teachers with the Jackson-Madison County School System came together to learn what to expect.
“It’s always exciting to kick off a school year, and these are teachers and professionals that chose us,” said Melissa Spurgeon, Chief of Staff for JMCSS. “That chose to come to work for us. Some of these teachers are coming straight out of college. This is their first teaching job. Then there’s others I met this morning that have transferred in from other school districts, which is very exciting.”
Spurgeon says this is an important time for the new teachers at JMCSS, as this is when they will learn many things about the school system.
“So they’ll go into different breakout sessions and kind of get oriented into our school system. Because even if you have taught in another school system, there’s a lot of different systems and protocols that are different. So they’ll go to different breakout sessions for that,” Spurgeon explained.
JMCSS has around 13,000 students, and staff are excited to continue success as they go into this school year.
“We tend to think this is going to be the best year yet. It just feels good,” Spurgeon said. “We’ve had great success over the past few years. Our test scores are coming in from this previous year and we have lots to celebrate. I just think our community support is phenomenal.”
Open houses for the schools will be held on August 1 from 3-6 p.m.
The first day of school for JMCSS will be August 5.
