Election official shares voting reminders as last day for early voting approaches

JACKSON, Tenn. — Early voting is still underway here in the Hub City and various other surrounding counties.

Early voting in Tennessee runs until July 27 for State and Federal primaries, and the County General elections. According to the Madison County Election Commission 5,600 people have cast ballots in Jackson.

“The numbers are about the same as any other election that we’ve had except for in 2014. It was a little heavier then. But, everybody is pretty enthused when they come in,” said Lori Lott, administrator of elections.

Lott expresses the impact that the potential elected officials will have. Many residents tell us every vote counts.

“It’s a big impact, the school board seats–you know, there’s nine positions over there so that’ll be an impact on the school system, and in state house. They’re the ones that pushes our laws through, make our laws. So, yeah, it’s very important,” said Lott.

Lott says the only issue they’ve had is with people who come in and think this is the presidential election. She clarifies confusion and ensures the public that election won’t take place until November.

“The president, that ballot is on the November ballot. So, it is not in this August ballot. A lot of people come in and they’re a little confused about that and they don’t see who they want to vote for. The Democratic Party hasn’t even chosen their nominee, so that ballot is not until November,” said Lott.

In Madison County, early voting will be open until 12 p.m. on Saturday at 309 North Parkway in west Jackson, in north Jackson.

According to the Madison County Election Commission, voters waiting until election day will have to cast their ballots at their designated precinct.
