Delta Faucet takes 10 JMCSS teachers on shopping spree

JACKSON, Tenn. — Part of Jackson-Madison County School System’s in-service week was a big celebration to prepare teachers for the upcoming school year. At the celebration, was a chance to win $500 dollars for classroom supplies.

“We chose 10 teachers out of all of the Jackson-Madison County School System. Each teacher will get $500 dollars that they can spend on anything they need for their classroom,” said David Smith, site director with Delta Faucet.

Delta Faucet of Jackson prides themselves on fulfilling social obligations to the community. Friday morning they did just that by giving back to teachers.

“We wanted to make sure that we could pick people from all around the school district so, we went to the in-service day and we set up a booth,” said Matrisha Holloway, people operations partner with Delta Faucet.

More than 500 teachers signed up. Two of the lucky winners were educators from Liberty Tech and Alexander Elementary.

“The first person I texted was my wife, like am I tripping? Do you see what I just won!?” said Tremon Cockrell, 12th grade math teacher at Liberty Technology High School.

“As soon as I found out I won, I stood up and yelled ‘highlighters for everyone!'” said Sabrina Sparks, 4th grade science teacher at Alexander Elementary School.

JMCSS does offer a stipend to help with classroom costs but the majority of supply costs come directly out of teacher’s pockets.

“It can vary. I know a minimum two-three hundred dollars a year. That’s just to start out,” said Cockrell.

Other classroom supplies come from students’ school supply list, however, only 50% of students come in on the first day with any supplies.

“There were so many children that came in and they didn’t have paper, pencils, or binders. You know I found myself buying things for them, you know, pencil bags. Just the little things to help them try and be organized,” said Sparks.

Delta Faucet expresses how appreciative they are of the district.

“They just play such an important part in our lives and in our children’s lives and just to be able to give back to these folks and what they do for their community, it’s just awesome,” said Smith.

And the teachers express how appreciative they are for Delta Faucet.

“It changes not only my outlook for the upcoming year, it gives us hopes and re-energizes things. I’m going to go get some Legos today, and a whole bunch of highlighters because kids love those highlighters,” said Sparks.

Delta employees hope other industries jump in on this next year, to be able to honor more teachers in the future.
