Hair loss: Common causes and misconceptions

JACKSON, Tenn. — August is National Hair Loss Awareness month. This month allows people to learn about different hair growth solutions and understand that hair loss can affect anyone, regardless of age or gender.

There’s a big myth that you shouldn’t wash your hair as often when you notice hair loss. However, it’s actually incredibly important to keep hair clean with gentle hair products.

This keeps your scalp in a healthy environment to optimize hair growth.

Another myth is the heightened role of genetics in hair loss.

“While genetics play a very big role in some forms of hair loss, what we also have to remember is our well being, we have to remember our diet and stress, our three biggest culprits to bring on hair loss,” said Penny James, trichologist and hair stylist.

Seeing a trichologist or dermatologist may also be helpful for those struggling with hair loss.

Treatments may include a change of diet, a more gentle shampoo or conditioner, and a supplement.
