Jackson City Council discusses USPS sorting location, more in monthly meeting
JACKSON, Tenn. — The Jackson City Council held their regularly scheduled monthly meeting Tuesday morning.
It was a pleasant change of pace compared to recent city council meetings. A short morning with not much on the agenda.
One of the first notable items was the election of a treasurer for the council. Councilmember Johnny Dodd was the previous treasurer before he had to step down from that position after being elected vice mayor last month. Councilmember Julie Holt was nominated and elected by the rest of the council.
Quite a few years ago the United States Postal Service moved the sorting of mail to Memphis after the building in Jackson received damage from a tornado. The city council voted to consider a resolution regarding this. Mayor Scott Conger explains more.
“The United States Postal Service decided that it would be more efficient, they could reduce workforce and move all the sorting to Memphis. So we’ve seen the negative impacts of that,” said Mayor Conger.
Madison County recently decided to bring this issue forward to try and get the USPS to bring the sorting back to Jackson.
“Mayor Massey reached out to me and asked me if we would consider that and I agreed. So, probably, we’ll send the resolution to the county and let them lead the effort and we’ll just be supportive in whatever way we can be supportive,” said Mayor Conger.
Ultimately, the decision on a change lies in the hands of the USPS.
A vote was also held to consider a contract for theCO to manage the public arts master plan for the City of Jackson.
“We had Sean Pitts come in and create a master plan for us. So having someone to manage that to work on commissioning art on public property so we can continue to beautify our arts district,” said Mayor Conger.
Everything will still need to be approved by the Public Arts Commission.
It was also said that, in the future, people in Jackson would be able to apply to be artists for future projects.
