Residents speak out after city makes attempts to remedy intersection
UPDATE (12/6/24): Woman faces several charges following fatal wreck on Windy City Road
JACKSON, Tenn. — As the Hub City grieves the loss of two young people involved in a fatal car accident, the city is now making attempts to make the intersection where it happened safer.
It’s an intersection well traveled in northwest Madison County; Windy City Road and McClellan Road. On Sunday, a fatal car accident occurred at the intersection that took the lives of two individuals and left two others with injuries.
Tuesday, city workers installed speed bumps in an attempt to remedy the issue. We spoke to drivers to hear their thoughts on the intersection itself and if they thought it was dangerous.
“This can be kind of hazardous. They don’t keep the brush cut back far enough so you have to kind of inch out into the road,” said one resident.
“They can be sometimes. It’s just some drivers don’t pay that much attention,” said another.
The city has since installed new speed bumps on the east and west sides of McClellan Road in an attempt to get people to slow down before stopping. The stop signs on McClellan also include blinking lights as well. However, even with all of these safety features, some residents still think it isn’t enough.
“You can see this thing they just put down here, everyone’s just going to try to dodge it,” said one resident in reference to the new speed bumps.
And dodging it is something that we saw while out at the intersection Tuesday evening. Some cars elected to drive into the oncoming traffic lane to avoid the new speed bumps. Another thing we saw was people visiting with flowers to a memorial for the victims, devastated by the loss of their friends.
“It’s just a tragedy. Its hurt so many people. I haven’t been able to get sleep over this cause of how bad its hurt me,” said Jorge Garcia.
Jorge Garcia says he has known the victim for at least 5 or 6 years. He along with other friends gathered at the intersection to mourn, with Garcia calling for more action from local officials.
“Out of all people that… Nobody deserves this but this is one of those situations that if the Mayor cares the way he does, he would definitely work towards putting lights up or something, cause this is sad,” said Garcia.
A GoFundMe has been created to help the family of those involved in the wreck, click here for more information.
