Freed-Hardeman prepares to welcome students for a new semester
HENDERSON, Tenn. — It’s back to school time for many students around West Tennessee, including our local colleges and universities.
Freed-Hardeman University is welcoming in their new students Saturday morning.
The campus of FHU was a little quiet Friday morning, with just a few students and some athletes on-site. However, on Saturday, the campus is going to be buzzing, as many new students are going to be moving into their dorms.
Whether you are a former parent, former student, faculty and staff, or anyone who has been a part of Freed-Hardeman’s Welcome Home Day, you know that it is special. We spoke with FHU President David Shannon on why that is.
“There are many hours spent in the life of a student here becoming a part of a community that’s also outside of the classrooms,” Shannon said. “So there’s this beautiful blend of classrooms and life experience with faculty, staff, and co-students, and watching freshman come in and transfer students come in, we call that first day ‘Welcome Home.'”
There were quite a few student leaders on campus — they are part of a program called Interface, which is sort of the new student orientation that lasts quite a few days with so many fun events.
We spoke with some of the coordinators of Interface on why this is so important for new students.
“We get to go on the Buffalo, we get to introduce them to the faculty and staff. We get to show them what is so much fun about Freed-Hardeman,” said Interface coordinator Sarah Pollock. “And we get to just have a lot of fun before classes start.”
New students will be moving in Saturday, August 10th. Current students will start trickling in Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday, and then the first day of classes will be held on Wednesday, August 14.
There will be over 300 new students moving in Saturday morning.
