City of Jackson to accept grant applications starting August 14

JACKSON, Tenn. — The City of Jackson will soon be accepting applications for those who have ideas to improve their neighborhoods.

The Neighborhood Improvement Project Grant, offered through the Love Your Block program by the City of Jackson opens up Wednesday, August 14.

“It’s open to business owners, colleges, high schools, churches, community groups. This year we are actually opening it up to all of Jackson, with the focus on midtown, east town and downtown Jackson,” said Elvia Trejo, neighborhood specialist for the City of Jackson.

Recent projects include murals that have been installed around the city but projects could include cultural events, block parties, pocket parks or community gardens.

This year there are different tiers and eight grants available.

Some can receive up to $5,000 to bring any projects ideas to life.

“This is such a great opportunity we are investing in our little block in downtown Jackson, on Shannon Street. We would love to be able to contribute to the public art,” said Katie Garcia, business owner.

To be eligible for the grant, applicants must have a detailed budget, the space must be free and accessible and also benefit the public.

Trejo says these types of projects spotlight opportunities to embody community involvement and development.

“From block parties that bring your neighbors together, to murals that show the history of Jackson,” said Trejo.

The deadline for applications is August 30.

Once all applications are received, the public can vote on which projects to approve.
