BBB: How to avoid robocall scams
JACKSON, Tenn. — Robocalls haven’t taken a hiatus since the Covid-19 pandemic for both consumers and businesses.
The Federal Communications Commission cracked down on scam callers, and tech-savvy individuals are coming up with ways to block the calls using call-blocking apps. Cell phone providers are also offering blocking services.
The FTC recommends three key steps consumers can take to help reduce unwanted calls: Hang up. Block. Report.
“We definitely highly suggest you, before you enter your personal information on the website, that you research that website, know who you’re giving your information to, read the fine print. Some websites may have small disclaimers and a lot of times we don’t read it, we just check the box in order for us to visit that site or to move on to a different section so we definitely want to read what we’re agreeing to before we press the agreement button,” said Toddnetta Trice, communications specialist for the BBB.
Consumers can also report robocalls to bbb.org/scamtracker.
The BBB shares scam tracker information with government and law enforcement agencies, so every piece of information is helpful in tracking down scammers.
