Lane College holds convocation to welcome students
JACKSON, Tenn. — Wednesday was the official opening of the academic session at Lane College.
“Lane College was founded in 1882 and so this historical black college has been around for close to 150 years. Educating minds, liberating minds and celebrating excellence in Christ. This is what we do. We transform lives, we liberate minds and we celebrate excellence in Christ,” said Darlette Samuels, chief of staff and vice president of institutional advancement.
Samuels told us that they were excited to welcome their new students as well as celebrate those that returned.
“To see a student who comes into the institution their first year, matriculate and walk across that stage–that is what we do every day. We make sure that we are really committed to student success,” said Samuels.
Many students and alumni were present to enjoy the ceremony. After a song from the Lane College Choir, directed by Professor Alexis Rainbow, it was time for the students to hear from motivational speaker, Paula Fontana.
Fontana is the vice president of the corporate partner development for the National Black MBA Association.
“I was created to encourage people to be the best version of themselves. And when I think about starting a new academic year, realizing how much motivation is needed, it is my honor to be able to pour into them and give them everything that I have so that they can achieve all that they want to accomplish this year. Remember that you are excellence,” said Fontana.
Interim President Dr. Donald Comer expressed his appreciation for Fontana including her dedication to making a positive impact.
