UTM students share excitement for upcoming semester

MARTIN, Tenn. — Students are moving in all over West Tennessee and one local college is ready for the start of the semester.

UT Martin is preparing for the school year in more ways than one. From student organizations, housing, dining and communication plans to ensure the students get acclimated to campus. The universities mission is to educate and engage responsible citizens in a diverse world. One student tells us what you can expect.

“I think the first thing you can expect is a smile from people. I think people are very, very kind here and whenever there’s a UT Martin–either a alumni or just an individual that I come in contact with, they’ve always been so kind and their faith really shines through, which I think is very special,” said Mollie June, Wesley Foundation member.

The energy is here on campus and they have a full line up of activities throughout the entire week to look forward to.

“On Monday we have a small group activities at 3 o’clock at the Wesley Foundation. Which our address is 312 Lovelace Drive Then, on Tuesday they have puzzles and pizza at 6 p.m. Then, on Wednesday we’re going to have community worship, so that starts at 5:15pm with a free dinner from Martin First United Methodist Church,” said June.

Many returning students are just excited to be back on campus with friends. Resident Life Assistant Hayden Spry tells us his experience being a UT Martin Skyhawk.

“We try to make it as homey as we can and just make you feel like you really belong and you really have a connection to the campus. It was like my freshman year coming in, I immediately felt that walking in. All the RA’s were ‘Hey, how are you doing?’ and that sort of thing. It was just–you really felt at home when you come up here to move in, especially as a freshman,” said Spry.

We also met with one of the newest members of the Skyhawk baseball team and he’s gearing up for a great season.

“I came here to play baseball and I’m ready to go. I’m going to major in sports management so I’m ready, I’m ready I’m ready to go!” said Jordan Hudson, Skyhawk baseball player.

“I cannot lie and tell you that I’m not nervous because he’s so far away. We’re from Valdosta, Georgia. That’s south Georgia. I’m nervous but I’m excited for him. He is excited to be able to play D1 baseball and it’s been one of his dreams for a while,” said Karen Hudson, mother to Jordan.

The convocation for UT Martin is Friday the 23rd, starting at 10 a.m. to kick off the new school year. Classes for UT Martin will start Monday, August 26.
