Union University kicks off new semester with convocation
JACKSON, Tenn. — As school is back in session, one university’s convocation welcomes students back to campus.
Now that Union University has everyone moved in, they kicked off their convocation with department chairs, deans, and program directors. The provost and vice president for academic affairs tells us they’re excited to have a large freshman class this year and they aim to keep that momentum as they move forward throughout the entire school year.
“Our mission is to provide Christ centered education that focuses on excellence and character development and service to church and society,” said Jacob Shatzer, provost and vice president of academic affairs.
The students are able to grasp the Christian values Union offers no matter what career path they decide to take.
“One of the interesting things about a Christian university is we really believe that Jesus Christ is the center of all reality. All things hold together in Christ so whether a student is studying music or studying communication arts, or studying political science or studying pharmacy or nursing–Christ holds all those disciplines together and so studying at a place like this, they’re able to see that and be shaped in that way,” said Shatzer.
Union also has a new project coming up next year that will contribute to the expansion of opportunity.
“We’re really excited to be opening a new academic building this next spring on our campus that will house computer science engineering and our business school as well and so that will be opening in March. We’re really excited to welcome students, faculty, staff, and community members into that space,” said Shatzer.
Union University was founded in 1823 here in Jackson and the college is turning 202 in the spring.
If you’re looking to explore the campus then Union Family Weekend will be held September 27-28.
