‘Safe Store Tennessee’ program offers free gun locks to citizens

JACKSON, Tenn. — The Department of Safety is encouraging Tennesseans to take part in protecting children from firearm injuries.

Did you know you can get free cable locks for your firearms? Well, now you can, and this is made possible through Tennessee’s Department of Safety and Homeland Security.

They recently announced the launch of the ‘Safe Store Tennessee’ program, which provides up to two free gun locks for each citizen.

The 15-inch cable works by running the cable through the barrel of the firearm, preventing it from being fired. It is recommended for firearm owners to use the free cable lock with other safe storage measures, like a gun case or lock box and store the keys out of reach.

Officials say even if you don’t have guns, it’s still important to have a conversation with your kids about gun safety.

Controversy has sparked this week after a 14-year old opened fire at a Georgia high school on Wednesday leaving four dead and multiple injured.

The father of the shooter is currently facing charges, after he admitted to buying the AR style rifle used in the mass shooting as a Christmas present for his son.

Research shows secure storage practices play a vital role in reducing the risk of gun violence, especially among children and teens.

The cable locks will secure most shotguns, rifles, pistols, and revolvers, and the rubber coating on the cable helps protect the firearm as it is safely stored.

The Safe Store Program has provided free cable lock pickup locations in all 95 counties, including police departments, driver services centers and Tennessee Highway Patrol district headquarters.

In Madison County, there are four locations you can pick up a gun lock, including the Jackson Police Department.

In a statement from JPD, they say “Our goal is to contribute to a safer environment by minimizing gun-related accidents and enhancing community safety through responsible practice.”

You can request your free cable lock from a location near you during regular business hours. You can also call to confirm cable lock availability before visiting.
