JMCSS welcomes three new members to Board of Education

JACKSON, Tenn. — One West Tennessee school district swore in new board members at their monthly meeting Monday evening.

Monday night, the Jackson-Madison County School System welcomed in three new members to the Board of Education.

Shane Barnes, Glenn Gaugh, and Andrea Givens-Moore officially joined the school board, all three swearing in before Judge Kyle Atkins. The trio were recently elected to the school board on the August 1 ballot.

We interviewed the three to learn more about them and understand their goals before their first school board work session Monday evening.

As for Barnes, a retired law enforcement officer, he discusses his experience in the police force along with his education at Jackson Central Merry in 1998.

“I’m just involved with law enforcement, school safety that kind of thing. I’m just really interested in the school system and keeping it safe is my biggest thing right now,” said Barnes.

Givens-Moore who is also a graduate of Jackson Central Merry who serves as a substitute teacher for the school system says she has a bachelors in business along with 14  grandchildren who live locally. Givens-Moore told us she wants to learn as much as she can and serve to the best of her ability.

“I want to make sure our children grow–learn successfully in our public school system, not charter schools, in our local public school system, where it’s free,” said Givens-Moore.

Gaugh another graduate of Jackson Central Merry has a bachelors and masters degree in sociology, working in the mental health field for more than 16 years. Gaugh says he is also a parent of two high school boys and wants to see them along with every other student in the system achieve success.

“My three goals, broadly, would be student achievement and success, fiscal responsibility, and transparency,” said Gaugh.

The trio sat down for their first school board work session minutes after being sworn in.
