Jackson-Madison Co. African American Chamber of Commerce Celebrity Golf Tournament returns
JACKSON, Tenn. — It was a morning full of smiles as the weather was perfect for the Jackson-Madison County African American Chamber of Commerce’s Celebrity Golf Tournament.
Names like Derrick Burroughs, Harold Rayford, Vyron Brown, and Jerry Reese were in attendance. Also, Ed “Too Tall” Jones, who participates every year, spoke about why he loves this event.
“This is my hometown, this is a very good cause, and also to see all of you,” Jones said.
Jones was not wrong about the very good cause. Don McCorry, JMCAACC’s Executive Director, told us about one of the programs they have that helps the youth in this area.
“We have a program in the summer where we introduce them to business leaders and community organizers, to talk about everything from finance, to credit, to soft skills in terms of communication within the office, how to dress appropriately, and that 30 second interview,” McCorry said.
It is called the “Follow Me” program, and it started in 2002.
A tournament that has been around for 13 years is certainly successful. McCorry talks about why he thinks that is.
“I think, more than anything else, it’s the connections that are made here from the individual players,” McCorry said. “A lot of them come back year after year. But I have been able to share this information with so many organizations like the Rotary Club, and Leadership Jackson. They all want to be a part of this as well.”
McCorry says that they are always willing to have more people, organizations, and businesses get involved with the work that they do.
“We would love to meet you,” said McCorry. “We are an inclusive organization. If you believe in our mission, we would love to be able to talk to you about partnerships and how we can change the lives of so many young people in this country.”
