Doctor talks recognizing mental health issues in youth

JACKSON, Tenn. — The mental health of our young ones is a very important topic. Sometimes, it can be hard to determine when there is an issue and determine how we can help.

A growing number of children and teens are struggling with mental health conditions.

In fact, 50% of all mental health conditions start to appear before the age of 14.

We spoke with Dr. Christine Crawford, who is the associate medical director for the National Alliance of Mental Illness, about some ways that we can identify mental health issues in our children.

“So often times parents have concerns about their kid’s moods and behavior, but that might only be an issue inside of the home,” Dr. Crawford said. “But if you start to notice that their moods and behaviors are interfering with things at school or in other aspects of their life, that definitely is a signal that something is going on.”

Even though the awareness for mental health in children is on the rise, many of them still go unnoticed.
