Officials reassure community following alleged school threats

TRENTON, Tenn. — It’s been a difficult week for schools across the country after a student opened fire at a Georgia High School last week killing four people.

There have been alleged reported ‘threats’ at multiple schools in the state that have parents worried about the safety of their children.

Thursday our team received tips of alleged reported threats at nearby schools in Henry, Benton, and Henderson County.

According to Henderson County Sheriff’s Office, they confirmed there were no recent reports to law enforcement by school officials of a possible threat in their district.

Benton County Schools put out a statement acknowledging the recent concerns, stating “There is no evidence of a threat at this time, but local law enforcement is investigating the allegations….And additional law enforcement will be present at schools Friday.”

According to Dr. Leah Watkins, director of schools in Henry County, she confirms that there are no threats at any Henry County Schools. “We have confirmed they are all rumors just like we anticipated,” said Dr. Watkins.

This comes after police confirmed an 18-year-old senior at Peabody High School, Martravion Maclin, was arrested Wednesday for carrying a weapon on school property.

Maclin is currently being held in the Gibson County Sheriff’s Department on a $10,000 bond.

Trenton Police Chief Bill Cusson encourages students to be courageous and report these incidents to staff, whether they are rumors or not.

According to schools districts and law enforcement agencies, they also reached out to Tennessee’s Department of Safety and Homeland Security to make the state aware of reports or incidents.
