Martin student charged with making threats of violence against school
PRESS RELEASE FROM THE MARTIN POLICE DEPARTMENT:
Social Media Threats Update
As a follow-up to our press release from 9/13/2024, the initial social media post/threat in regards to potential school threats, it has been determined by our agency in conjunction with TN Dept. of Homeland Security that those posts were part of a nationwide false threat case that has caused chaos across the country. The FBI is currently working on that national case.
The second incident that we dealt with last Friday, 9/13/2024 was in fact determined to be of local origin. This false threat through social media was thoroughly investigated and the responsible party was identified. As a result of this investigation, a Martin Middle School student has been charged with TCA 38-16-517- Making Threats of Violence Against a School. This charge is a Class E Felony.
Due to the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), we cannot comment on any action that was taken or was not taken by the Weakley County School System in regard to this incident.
