Local organizations work to increase voter registration numbers
JACKSON, Tenn. — With Election Day being less than two months away, community members and organizations combined to help other residents in the area register to vote.
Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority and the Eric Beasley Foundation offered their help Tuesday at the Tennessee School of Applied Science and Technology in Jackson.
“We just want to encourage you to get out there and vote. Exercise your right to vote. Your vote is your voice,” said Monique Merriweather, president of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority.
You may request an application for an absentee by-mail ballot anytime between 90 and 7 days before the election. You may also get this ballot at your local county elections office. If you’re a first time voter, there are some requirements.
“Number one priority, make sure that they’re registered to vote and make sure they have identification,” said Patricia Beasley, president of the Eric Beasley Foundation.
Organizers mentioned that Tennessee has recently had the lowest voter turnout in the country.
“45% of our people in Tennessee actually go out to vote. We’re here today to raise that number up. On National Voters Registration Day, all over the country, that number is going to be raised. That’s why we’re here with the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority,” said Merriweather.
“And the Eric Beasley Foundation, we are going to get it right. And we want to encourage people that if you are registered to vote, make sure you check your polling location. Where are you going to vote on Election Day?” said Beasley.
Those who need to register to vote have until October 7. Early voting runs from October 16-31, with Election Day being November 5.
