Walk to End Alzheimer’s returns to Rockabillys Stadium this Saturday
JACKSON, Tenn. — The Walk to End Alzheimer’s is returning to the Jackson Rockabillys Stadium in just a few days.
This event is one of the biggest fundraising opportunities for the Tennessee Alzheimer’s Association. The money raised is to help go towards a cure for Alzheimer’s.
While this is a time for people to walk and donate, there is also a wonderful ceremony called the “Promise Garden” that can help people connect.
“We ask people to, depending on why they’re there that day, to raise their flower,” said Don Schwartz, walk manager. “We have a particular flower for a caregiver for example, and caregivers will be asked to raise their flower. That caregiver that I mentioned may not know of others going through similar journeys.”
When they see people holding flowers that are the same colors as theirs, they can hopefully make a connection and help support each other.
Kara Garrett is with The Jackson Clinic, and she talks about how the Alzheimer’s Association helps them with their work.
“They help us at the clinic to ensure that we’re providing the correct information to our patients, the most up-to-date screening resources to screen patients for Alzheimer’s dementia, and they also let us know what community resources are available,” Garrett said.
So you can do the walk and meet people to make connections, but this event is also a great learning opportunity.
“Coming out to the walk on Saturday will allow anybody to ask questions about what Alzheimer’s dementia is, if they’re concerned about a family member, how can they get that family member screened. There will be multiple tents and vendors there that are community resources and support for patients,” said Garrett.
The walk is Saturday, September 28. Registration begins at 8 a.m. However, if you cannot make it on Saturday, you can always reach out to donate or begin fundraising yourself at anytime.
The event is completely free, and while you can register when you get there, you can also register right now.
