BBB warns mid-south consumers of potential subscription scams

JACKSON, Tenn. — The Better Business Bureau has received an increase in calls from concerned consumers.

According to the BBB, keto drops and keto gummies are super popular in the mid-south area, however some have found themselves in a dilemma when buying the product.

“When they actually buy the product, what they’re not realizing is that once they buy the product, they are automatically hooked onto a subscription. Once they buy the product, about a month or so later, a lot of times they realize by checking their account, that they keep being charged for the same product,” said Toddnetta Trice, communication specialist for BBB Mid-South.

Some consumers receive more of the product because of the subscription, but there are some who are charged without seeing more of the product.

This also applies to shopping online at Walmart or the TikTok shop.

“I’m a mom and so I’m on the Walmart app looking for diapers. I always have to look closely because it’s already set to where it’ll be a subscription. They’ll keep sending me diapers for two weeks and they’ll keep charging me,” said Trice.

This also applies to free trials for TV subscriptions such as Netflix, Hulu or Peacock.

“Free trials will end up going into membership trials and then you’ll start having a payment taken out of your account because with this free trials, they do want you to put in your card information because the free trial is only for a certain amount of days,” said Trice.

If a deal seems outrageously good, the BBB warns that you that it may be a scam.

“A lot of times if they investigate and find that it’s fraud, they will give you that money back. But of course they will want you to shut down that card and get a new one,” said Trice.

Make sure you know how to cancel any unwanted subscriptions. Contact the company to revoke payment authorization and give your bank a ‘stop payment order.’

BBB also urges you to read the reviews of a product, which sometimes can tell you all you need to know about the product before you purchase it.
