Department of Veterans Affairs strives to end veteran homelessness

JACKSON, Tenn. — The Department of Veterans Affairs recently announced it has permanently housed more than 41,000 homeless veterans across the country, meeting the agency’s original fiscal year goal a month early. Thanks in part to VA’s efforts, the number of veterans experiencing homelessness has fallen by by more than 52% since 2010.

VA’s work is built on the evidence-based “housing first” approach, which prioritizes getting a veteran into housing, then providing them with the wraparound support they need to stay housed, including health care, job training, legal and education assistance, and more.

“Whatever it may be, we provide that support so that we continue to help them really thrive in that home. We don’t just find them a home, we help them stay in that home,” said Ms. Meg Kabat, chief of staff for the Department of Veteran Affairs.

In some cases, the Department of Veterans Affairs staff and partners help veterans end their homelessness by reuniting them with family and friends.
