High school students visit Lane College for Career Speed Networking Program

JACKSON, Tenn. — Students, professionals, and even a celebrity gathered at a local university for a special event.

The Education Equal Opportunity Group held another Career Speed Networking Program at Lane College Thursday morning. Many high school students attended to learn and get advice about their future. If you are not aware of what the EEOG is, we spoke with their president to learn more.

“For the last two decades, we’ve been serving rural and urban communities to pair talented high school students with industry leaders from the public and private sectors that they can actually emulate,” said George Thomas, president of the Education Equal Opportunity Group.

One of the coolest things about this program is that the students began their morning talking to current Lane College seniors.

The seniors gave advice on college life, and then answered questions from the students. Following this, they got to have one on one interviews with many professionals from this community.

“So today we’re hosting our 5th annual Career Speed Networking Program. The purpose is so that we reduce the blame shifting by saying I didn’t know this opportunity was available by showing different talents that reside in this area in Jackson,” said Thomas.

Like many events here, the people of Jackson show up and show out to make things great. This event is no different. The professionals here see the importance of speaking with the high school students.

“We are so excited, because it takes a community, right? We’re all about just sharing the resources and making sure that young people who have a desire to be successful we point out the tools and resources that they need to be on that task,” said Thomas.

There were some schools from Memphis in attendance, as well as Fayette-Ware High School, some local schools in Jackson, Lauderdale County, Halls, and Ripley High School.

Former college and NFL player Michael Oher also spoke to the students towards the end of the program.
