Educator of the Week: Emily Brown
It’s time now to recognize our Educator of the Week, brought to you by the Tennessee Education Lottery.
Emily Brown is a 1st grade teacher at South Elementary School in Pinson.
“I knew in high school that I wanted to be a teacher, got out of high school and went right to college and have never turned back and have never regretted my decision,” Brown said.
This is now Brown’s 28th year as an educator.
“My favorite part is teaching reading, that is my passion,” said Brown. “I love to teach phonics, I love to see the children when they are finally able to blend words and they develop a love for reading.”
Brown also shares her appreciation for the HOPE Scholarship, stating that the financial aid program means opportunity for children who may not have that opportunity otherwise.
When it comes to struggles, Brown voices her priorities.
“You could probably be at school 24/7 and not get everything done in your classroom,” Brown said. “You might not get it as cute as you want it or get everything done, and you have to realize the kids don’t want a tired teacher, they want a teacher that comes in energized and ready to teach everyday, so some of the things that are not as important, put those to the side and a wise person did tell me that years ago, to come to school rested and ready to have fun.”
Brown encourages more people to go into education.
“I tell people all the time that this is my mission field. God gives us gifts and I think he gives those gifts of teaching to some people, and I think we should definitely pursue those gifts,” she said. “It’s probably the most rewarding job, and it’s not just a job, it’s a life, it’s a gift, it is a true gift.”
Brown shares that winning Educator was surprising and humbling.
“You don’t always hear a ‘thank you,’ and people don’t realize how much it means to us to know that we are loved and appreciated. It just means a lot, it’s very humbling.”
Brown is now eligible for the Tennessee Education Lottery Educator of the Month award.
