New treatment offers hope to lung cancer patients
JACKSON, Tenn. — Lung cancer remains the leading cause of cancer-related deaths in the United States.
It claims nearly 125,000 lives each year.
This information is from the Lung Cancer Foundation of America.
There have been many advances in treatment, but it still poses a major threat.
However, there is a new opportunity for lung cancer patients.
It is called adjuvant therapy.
It is designed to prevent the recurrence of cancer by rounding up and eradicating any remaining cancer cells after primary treatment.
“In most cases it’s surgery, and then you give something else,” said Dr. Jonathon Villena-Vargas. “The reason this is important is because we can do the perfect surgery, but about half of the patients will have a relapse, or the cancer comes back. So adjuvant therapy helps prevent that.”
The personalized nature of adjuvant therapy allows it to be tailored to each patient’s specific needs.
