Hub City teachers hand build unique playground for students

JACKSON, Tenn. — Two teachers at a local school dedicated their summer to building a unique play area to make a space outdoors that benefits their students.

After generous donations from grandparents and an annual spring fundraiser, Pre-K Teacher Lindsey Carson and Lower School Learning Specialist Malinda Musselman at Augustine School in northwest Jackson were able to construct two play spaces for students.

The goal was to inspire students’ imagination with “natural play.” The playgrounds use natural materials including wood from a fallen tree, repurposed JEA utility poles, stones and water. There is a wooden play house, log scramble, climbing poles, rope web, a dig-pit and more.

“We wanted a place for our children to play that was honoring to the Lord and pointing to him and pointing to the beauty of creation that he provides to us every day. It’s just a gift to us and we wanted our children to play in that and recognize his creativity,” said Musselman.

The play area will soon be recognized as the Carson-Musselman Park, named after the teachers.
