WRAP’s Purple Sand Project aims to raise awareness about domestic violence

JACKSON, Tenn. — October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month and one organization is looking to raise awareness.

We all know of the Red Sand Project to raise awareness for human trafficking. Now, WRAP is using another color of sand to let people know about the tragedy of domestic violence.

“Just to spread awareness and get the education out to people that they don’t have to fight this alone. The purple sand in the cracks will represent those who we have lost. And again, just spread that awareness, educate, and let people know we are here,” said Ashly Horton, domestic violence response specialist for WRAP.

Wrap offers many things to assist those who are victims of domestic violence or sexual assault.

“We provide resource linkage, we have safe homes available to those who are fleeing imminent danger, we have a housing program, we provide therapeutic services to those who are in need, we provide emotional support, court accompaniment if they have to go to court for an order of protection or maybe following through with criminal charges,” said Horton.

If you need help or are wanting to learn more about their services, then there are some easy ways to do so.

“They can come to our office here at 512 Roland Avenue. They can call our crisis hotline 24/7. Pretty much we see a lot of walk-ins,” said Horton.

They are also doing their clothesline project. Survivors of domestic violence and decorated t-shirts that are placed outside of the building. If you want to learn more about what WRAP has to offer, click here.
