Local fire departments highlight safety tips during National Fire Prevention Week
LEXINGTON, Tenn. — Local fire departments give tips on fire safety and its prevention.
Henderson County Fire Department and Lexington Fire Department were at Walmart for Fire Prevention Week to make the community aware of the importance of smoke alarms.
“Smoke alarms give you the early warning. Henderson County and Lexington both are in the top 10 in the state for the most smoke alarms installed,” said Amber Crawford, public education coordinator with the City of Lexington.
Each participant that stopped at the table received a goody bag filled with candy and pamphlets on fire prevention.
“We also have alarms for the hard of hearing and the deaf. They’re called ‘safe awake’ or some people call them ‘bed shakers.’ We can also get them from the state. We really appreciate our partners with the Tennessee State Fire Marshal’s Office that provide us with these for absolutely free and then we can turn around and provide them back to everybody in Henderson County and Lexington for free too,” said Crawford.
There was also a special little helper present.
“That’s my little ‘Sparky’ with his little fire trucks. The kids love playing with him. He has suckers in there to kind of draw the attention to us,” said Crawford.
There’s a website where children can enjoy playing games while learning how to be safe in the event they face a fire. The department also reminds the community that burn season is October 15 through May 18.
“We request that anytime that you’re gonna do any outdoor burning, call us at the 968-8219 number and get a burn permit number. That way we’re just aware of what’s going on so people don’t call if you have a leaf pile. But also, if it gets out of hand and you’re not able to contain it, or the wind picks up or whatever, we can come and assist you with that,” said Crawford.
To receive a burn permit, contact the Lexington Fire Department at 731-989-5664.
