White Cane Day bringing awareness to the visually impaired
JACKSON, Tenn. — One nonprofit highlights the significance of October 15.
The STAR Center took the opportunity to honor National White Cane Awareness Day at Jackson City Hall.
Currently, 200,000 people in Tennessee are legally blind, and this day highlights the white cane as a symbol of independence for visually impaired users.
Those that came out to bring awareness for today walked around the Jackson/Madison County offices while using their white cane.
Brad Blair with The STAR Center shares that during his teachings of using the white cane, he enjoys teaching others what’s possible.
“I’ve been using one since childhood, and it really is one of the foundational ways to learn what’s around me in the environment to keep myself safe, so that I can safely and efficiently keep doing life, like doing my job,” Blair said.
For those who are either blind or visually impaired, The STAR Center offers their services to you.
