National Pet Wellness Month: Keeping pets healthy
JACKSON, Tenn. — Care can be an expensive cost and we are looking for ways to keep those costs down.
October is National Pet Wellness Month. It is so important to pet owners that their animal is happy and healthy. One of the hardest things with unhealthy pets is the cost. It can get really expensive when your pet needs treatment. Dr. Courtney Campbell is a veterinarian who spoke with us about ways we can keep our furry friends in tip-top shape.
“Sometimes it’s difficult. If you are just thinking about how to keep my pet healthy overall, number one is keep your pet’s weight healthy. Keep them at a good body condition. I see more issues with overweight pets than I do with anything else,” said Dr. Campbell.
Dr. Campbell says that there are a few ways to make sure your pet stays healthy and is at a good weight. The first is a good diet. Feeding your pet good quality food, while not overfeeding, will go a long way. Also, exercise is very important for just about any animal that you may have at home.
“I will say that a lot of people will say, ‘Well, how much? How much exercise should my pet be getting?’ And of course it’s going to vary based on the energy level of your pet, but if you can do 20 minutes twice a day, that’s a great starting place,” said Dr. Campbell.
Synchrony has partnered with some pet health insurance to help people keep costs down if, unfortunately, your pet needs to receive care. Dr. Campbell tells us how this works with an acronym. That acronym is C-A-R-E.
“And that is ‘C’ come in and see your vet. ‘A’ authorize payment on a care credit card. And then ‘R’ report that claim or file a claim with pet’s best health insurance. And then ‘E’ simply just wait for those expenses and that reimbursement,” said Dr. Campbell.
A recent study from Synchrony revealed that nearly half of pet parents underestimate the lifetime cost of care for their pet. An annual wellness visit to your veterinarian can help find issues that you may never notice
