Shooting suspect awaits arraignment after turning himself in

JACKSON, Tenn. — Wednesday evening we brought you a few updates regarding the shooting that occurred over the weekend that resulted in multiple injuries and one death.

We have been bringing you coverage and updates regarding the shooting that occurred Sunday, October 20, at the Picture Perfect Event Center in Jackson. Eight people were injured and one victim later died in the hospital. We were able to catch up with Jackson Mayor, Scott Conger, regarding this incident.

“As a city, we’re heartbroken when things like this happen. We don’t want it to happen. It’s unfortunate. The city and the police department are dependent on those that are there cause our police officers are not there when those incidents happen. It’s a tragic event. We want to make sure that the person or people that are responsible for this are brought to justice,” said Mayor Conger.

Wednesday, the Jackson Police Department announced that there is a suspect in connection with this shooting. 22-year-old Matthew Berry was charged with first-degree felony murder and attempted second-degree murder. We spoke with Jackson Police Chief Thom Corley about the investigation.

“Witnesses weren’t very forthcoming. The witnesses that were present didn’t have any information to provide us as far as the suspect in this case. So we had to do some heavy lifting on the front end. But we did, over time when we put this information out we got some Crime Stoppers tips and some other information that led us to focus on Mr. Berry,” said Chief Corley.

At around 1:20 Thursday afternoon Matthew Berry surrendered himself to the Jackson Police Department. They put him in a police car and sent him over to the Madison County-Justice Complex. Chief Corley tells us about what is next for Berry.

“Well he is going, right now, to the criminal justice complex to be booked in under warrants that have been signed. Then he will have his appearance with city court. That’ll be next,” said Chief Corley.

Chief Corley reiterated to us that any information that you have about anything that goes on in the City of Jackson can go a long ways to making an arrest.
