Jackson-Madison NAACP addresses voting complaints, safety concerns

JACKSON, Tenn. — With just a week left until the general election, one organization expresses concerns regarding voting complaints.

“We received numerous complaints in reference to the voting machines changing the outcome of what they intended. We understand that there is voting error and people do make mistakes and we wanted to come today to remind people that voting is important and we have over 35,000 people who have yet to vote in Madison County,” said Harrell Carter, president of the Jackson-Madison County NAACP branch.

Carter has shared that his organization and others have received complaints this election season. Voters have shared that the new touch screen voting machines have been an adjustment for some voters. On the screen voters have tried selecting the square in the upper left corner instead of clicking the name of their candidate.

“The problem is, once it has shown what you have voted for on the screen we need to look at that and then you print it. You need to look at it again, look at it again, because if it’s going to change you’ll it see on your ballot,” said Carter.

The voting stations are supplying voters with stylus’ to assist them while voting. Carter is asking that those who have not voted to make sure to double check their decisions so it is to their liking. Once your vote has been cast in the ballot there is no re-voting.

He is also asking drivers and voters to be cautious of their driving in the parking lot.

“There was an accident out here last week. Young man by the name Trey Cleek was run over by someone going the wrong way. For years we have asked the commission to extend the voting locations. We got over 64,000 or 65,000 voters in Madison County one location is simply not enough,” said Carter.

He also shared that he did ask voting administrator of elections, Lori Lott, to speak at the press conference. However Lott expressed she was focusing on the polls as Madison County is trying to break a record this voting season.

Thursday, October 31 will be the last day of early voting.
