‘Suspicious male’ arrested near school in Savannah

Around 11:30 today, our department was notified of the School Resource Officer at Parris South Elementary requesting additional officers for a suspicious male on the outskirts of the school grounds possibly armed with a knife. SPD officers, detectives, and command staff responded to the scene to assist with the situation.
Upon arrival, it was determined that the male was not a threat to the school. Deputies with the Hardin County Sheriff Department arrested the individual subsequent to a search of his person. As the case is being handled by HCSD, we cannot comment further on any charges the individual in question is, or possibly could be, facing.
It was determined quickly that neither the school nor the children were in danger and SPD officers cleared the scene.
SPD Chief of Police Michael Pitts stated, “I would like to commend the actions of HCSD’s SRO for his quick reaction to this situation. We are proud to have 5 of the 7 county schools located within our city limits, and are always here to assist the school system and HCSD however and whenever they need us.”
