Jackson murder suspect found sleeping in city playground, warrant reveals
JACKSON, Tenn. — A man appeared in court in reference to a murder earlier this year.
22-year-old Jadakiss Deberry is charged with felony murder, attempted especially aggravated robbery, and possession of a handgun while under the influence.
The first two charges stem from an incident on September 1 at Lincoln Courts in east Jackson.
According to a warrant obtained in Jackson City Court, Jackson Police officers were dispatched to a residence on Lincoln Circle around 3:30 p.m. for a report of a shooting. Upon arrival, the warrant states officers found a male victim laying unconscious on the floor with multiple gunshot wounds. The victim, who has not been identified by authorities, died as a result of the injuries.
The warrant states that an investigation led police to a witness of the shooting, who identified Deberry as the person responsible.
A separate warrant reveals that around 8:30 a.m. on September 4, an officer made contact with a man who was sleeping on the playground at Forest Hills Park, later identified as Deberry. The responding officer stated that Deberry’s eyes were bloodshot, and that he had the odor of an alcoholic beverage. According to the warrant, the officer observed a handgun near Deberry, and the officer had to give loud verbal commands to get Deberry to stop attempting to pick up the firearm. A warrant says this firearm was later determined to be the weapon used to shoot the victim in Lincoln Courts.
The warrant states the officer detained Deberry, then discovered he had a warrant through the county — at which point Deberry was transported to the Madison County jail.
According to the warrant, on September 5, Deberry told investigators that he shot the victim because they “looked at him in an attempt to intimidate him” and believed the victim was going to rob him.
Deberry was scheduled to appear in Jackson City Court Wednesday morning, where his case was reset to a later date. According to records available online, Deberry currently remains in custody at the Madison County jail.
