Smoke alarm saves sleeping resident during home fire

HENDERSON COUNTY, Tenn. — Smoke alarms helped save a local resident who was asleep at the time a fire occurred.

According to the Henderson County Fire Department, firefighters were dispatched to a house fire in the 9000 block of Highway 200, just before 3 a.m. Wednesday.

The department says one occupant was home and asleep when the fire occurred, but they were awakened by smoke alarms and able to escape outside.

The department says firefighters worked for nearly three hours to extinguish the fire, however the home is considered a total loss.

According to the fire department, a space heater was determined to be the cause of the fire, marking the department’s first heating-related fire of the cold season.

Citizens are reminded to unplug space heaters when not in use, and to contact your local fire department to obtain a free smoke alarm.
