Water concerns continue in Huntingdon as residents experience discoloration

HUNTINGDON Tenn. — The Town of Huntingdon is experiencing difficulty trying to keep its drinking water clear for residents.

Residents are concerned about their tap water. Some describe it as a brown discoloration. The question neighbors are asking is what’s next?

“We’re in the process of getting a contractor to come in here and run our operation on our water plant to get everything cleared up and see where we stand,” said Mayor Chad Edwards, Town of Huntingdon.

One daycare owner is also speaking out.

“It was the cold water that was brown and whenever the kids would go to the bathroom the toilets would be brown,” said Jobina Gordon, Owner of Big Mamas House Infinite Heart Childcare.

“I probably would not just straight up drink it right now. Had we had a bad test come back that says there’s something in it as far a bacteria goes? Not at all, but to shower and wash and stuff like that, you’re fine,” said Mayor Edwards.

According to newly-elected Mayor Edwards, they’re making efforts to also address wrong meter reads.

“About a month ago they started installing our electronic meters. We’re realizing that the mechanical reads are not lining up the way we want them to,” said Edwards.

According to Mayor Edwards, they’re taking a 12-month water average and sending that out as a bill to all residents for now. This will go on until they get the last electronic meter installed that will will then make the meter system auto operated, so there is less potential for errors in meter readings.

According to Edwards, they’re relying on the Tennessee Local Development Authority Grant from December 2023, worth over $1 million to address their water woes.
