Keep your holiday gifts secure from porch pirates this season
CROCKETT COUNTY, Tenn. — Some of Santa’s helpers have already began some early holiday shopping. However, be aware of others that may want to take away the holiday joy.
“Caught on video, someone pulled up to somebodies house and stole a leaf blower out of their garage — out of all things — not a package, but something that doesn’t belong to them,” said Stephen Sutton, Crockett County public information officer.
Crockett County and Jackson-Madison County law enforcement have noticed an increase in burglaries.
To make sure your items stay safe, lock your car doors and make sure your home is secure.
“Have a good safe space for those packages to be delivered so they can be secured and out of sight from those criminals looking for an opportunity to steal as they drive by your home,” said Sutton.
For those who are setting up holiday lights and decorations, here is a reminder before adding those finishing touches.
“Make sure that the decorations you have around your home do not obscure visibility to make it easier for people to break into your home to get in and out without being seen,” said Sutton.
For travelers make sure that you inform a trusted neighbor before taking a long vacation and to think before you post.
“Wait until you come back home and share those pictures and share that information with your family so that other people aren’t aware of exactly what your plans are — that you’re not going to be at home during the holiday season,” said Sutton.
For those who like to shop in person, keep your items in the car protected.
“Keep your purse out of the view of those that may be walking. Keep your vehicles locked and keep your packages stored in the trunk where they can not be seen. Be aware of your surroundings,” said Sutton.
Another tip is to make sure your camera systems are working properly as Tennessee is ranked 11th for porch pirates.
