Tips to safeguard against scams, fraud this holiday season
JACKSON, Tenn. — Scammers are gearing up to take advantage of increased online shopping around the holidays.
However, there are steps you can take to protect yourself and loved ones from falling victim.
- Protect accounts with strong pins as your first line of defense.
- Review and update the email addresses and phone numbers associated with your accounts.
- Never share sign-in codes or “magic links” sent to your phone or email.
Also, watch for new device login security alerts and respond promptly to unauthorized transactions.
Next, use unique passwords and verify the identity of the person you’re sending money to.
“Remember that if something is weird or too good to be true offline, it’s also too good to be true online. That’s a good guide to avoid scams anywhere,” said Dino Dai Zovi, head of security for Cash App.
Lastly, exercise caution. If you’re sending money and your payment app sends you a scam alert, take a second to think the purchase through.
